Two things account for most of these before anything electrical is involved. A door seal that has gone hard admits warm damp air continuously, and a condenser matted with dust cannot shed the heat that air brings in with it. Once both are ruled out we look at the defrost circuit and at the evaporator fan.

Either the bin thermostat or level sensor is no longer telling the machine to stop, or a tired gasket is letting warm damp air reach the ice so that the surface melts slightly and refreezes against the cube next to it. Along the coast the gasket wins that argument most of the time.
The drain line, the drain pump on machines that have one, or a bin gasket gone hard. Gravity drains silt up faster on the peninsula than anywhere else we work, because the water leaves more behind as it goes through.
A condenser packed tight with dust and salt with the fan working against it, or a water pump starting to cavitate. Both put avoidable load on the compressor, and both are inexpensive to sort out while they are still only a noise.
